How ideal weight is estimated

The healthy range comes from the World Health Organization BMI: 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height² (height in meters).

The classic formulas start from a weight at 5 ft and add a fixed amount per inch above it. Devine, for example: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg. They were created for drug dosing and disagree with one another.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula is right?

None is exact for one person. The WHO range is the most widely used reference; the formulas are for comparison.

Why a range and not one number?

People of the same height have different frames and body composition. Any weight in the range counts as healthy by BMI.

Does it apply to children?

No. Children and teens are assessed with growth charts by age.
