This is an estimate: only about 4% of babies are born on their due date. A first-trimester ultrasound and your doctor give the most reliable date.
How the due date is calculated
With Naegele's rule: LMP + 280 days (40 weeks), counted from the first day of your last menstrual period. For cycles other than 28 days, we add or subtract the difference.
Gestational age counts the weeks since the LMP. Trimesters: up to 13 weeks 6 days; 14 to 27 weeks; 28 weeks onward.
Frequently asked questions
Why count from the period and not from conception?
The period date is the one known for sure; conception usually happens about two weeks later.
Can the date change?
Yes. A first-trimester ultrasound often adjusts it; your doctor's date is the one to use.
When is a baby full term?
Between 37 and 42 weeks is considered term; before 37 weeks is preterm.
