How to work with fractions

Add and subtract: use a common denominator. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

Multiply: numerator times numerator, denominator times denominator. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.

Divide: multiply by the reciprocal. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.

Finally, the fraction is simplified by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Frequently asked questions

How do I simplify a fraction?

Divide the numerator and denominator by the largest number that divides both (the GCD). 18/24: the GCD is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4.

What is a mixed number?

A whole number plus a proper fraction. 7/4 = 1 3/4, because 7 ÷ 4 is 1 remainder 3.

Can I use negative numbers?

Yes. The sign is always kept on the numerator of the result, for example −3/4.

How do I turn a decimal into a fraction?

Write it over 10, 100 or 1,000 and simplify: 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4.
