How BMI is calculated
BMI divides weight in kilograms by height in meters squared: BMI = weight ÷ height². At 70 kg and 1.75 m: 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.
In US units the same result comes from 703 × pounds ÷ inches²; the calculator converts pounds and feet/inches exactly (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 in = 2.54 cm).
World Health Organization classification for adults: below 18.5 — underweight; 18.5 to 24.9 — healthy; 25 to 29.9 — overweight; 30 to 34.9 — obesity class I; 35 to 39.9 — class II; 40 or more — class III.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, the WHO considers 18.5 to 24.9 healthy. The healthy weight range depends on your height: the calculator shows yours.
Does BMI apply to children?
Not with this table. Children and teens are assessed with BMI-for-age percentile charts by sex.
Why can athletes have a high BMI?
Because BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat. Very muscular people can fall in the overweight range without excess fat.
Is BMI different for men and women?
The formula and WHO ranges are the same for adult men and women.
