Mean

7.9167

For the 6 numbers, the mean is 7.9167 and the median is 7.5.

How it is calculated

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value in sorted order (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the most frequent value.

The standard deviation measures spread: √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)) for a sample and ÷ n for a whole population. Use the sample version when your numbers are part of a larger group.

Frequently asked questions

Sample or population standard deviation?

Sample (n − 1) when the data is a sample of a larger group, as in a survey. Population (n) when you have every case.

Why is the median different from the mean?

The mean is pulled by extreme values and the median is not. With incomes, a few high values raise the mean.

How many numbers can I paste?

Up to 1,000. Copy a spreadsheet column and paste it: each line becomes a number.
