How profit per sale is calculated
From the selling price come the marketplace fee (a percentage), the fixed fee per sale, the shipping you pay, tax and the product cost: profit = price − cost − fee − fixed fee − shipping − tax − other.
To find the price for a target margin, the percentages go into the divisor: price = (cost + fixed fee + shipping + other) ÷ (1 − fee − tax − margin). Example: $45 cost, $5 fixed fee, $2 other, 15% fee, 6% tax and a 20% margin give 52 ÷ 0.59 = $88.14.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my fee?
On the marketplace's official fee schedule or in your seller account. Fees depend on category and change over time.
Why are fees not preset for each marketplace?
They vary by category, listing type, price band and date. Using the numbers from your account keeps the result right.
Margin or markup?
Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is how far the price is above cost. A 20% margin is not a 20% markup.
Does sales tax go in?
Only if you pay it out of the price. Many marketplaces collect and remit sales tax for you; then leave it at 0.
